SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY IN WORLD HISTORY. An introduction
In modern industrial society, the tic between science and technology seems clear, even inevitable. But historically, as James E. McClellan III and Harold Dorn remind us, the connection was far less apparent. For much of human history, technology depended more on the innovation of skilled artisans than it did on the speculation of scientists. Technology as "applied science," the authors argue, emerged relatively recently, as industry and governments began funding scientific research that would lead directly to new or improved technologies. In Science and Technology in World History, McClellan and Dorn offer an introduction to this changing relationship.
McClellan and Dorn review the historical record beginning with the thinking and tool making of prehistoric humans. Neolithic people, for example, developed metallurgy of a sort, using naturally occurring raw copper, and kept systematic records of the moon's phases. Neolithic craftsmen possessed practical knowledge of the behavior of clay, fire, and other elements of their environment, but though they may have had explanations for the phenomena of their crafts, they toiled without any systematic science of materials or the self-conscious application of theory to practice.
Without neglecting important figures of Western science such as Newton and Einstein, the authors demonstrate the great achievements of non-Western cultures. They remind us that scientific traditions took root in China, India, and Central and South America, as well as in a series of Near Eastern empires, during late antiquity and the Middle Ages, including the vast region that formed the Islamic conquest. From this comparative perspective, the authors explore the emergence of Europe as a scientific and technological power. Continuing their narrative through the Manhattan Project, NASA, and modern medical research, the authors weave the converging histories of science and technology into an integrated, perceptive, and highly readable narrative.

Personne ne guérit d'une fièvre grâce au son de la corde d'un arc ! Ne s'agirait-il pas plutôt d'une malédiction ?

Des vacances de Noël en famille sur l'île de Lanzarote - ce rêve de Henning, mari et jeune père plein de bonne volonté, risque de tourner au vinaigre. Le temps est maussade, le moral se détériore ; les crises d'angoisse qu'il redoute tant réapparaissent. Le premier janvier, il décide de s'éloigner des obligations familiales, d'un amour mêlé d'incompréhension et d'une paternité qui l'écrase. Il enfourche un médiocre vélo de location et entreprend, par défi, une ascension harassante. C'est un homme épuisé qui arrive au sommet de la montagne, où paysage et village se révèlent. Tel un voile qui se déchire, il lui semble retrouver un lieu maudit de sa petite enfance, une expérience traumatisante dont la romancière ressuscite alors chaque instant enfoui dans sa mémoire. Juli Zeh, à son meilleur, se livre à un travail vertigineux d'expérimentation psychique : la plongée de Henning dans l'onde obscure du refoulé nous hantera longtemps.

Ici, nulle certitude, le doute imprègne tout le texte. L'auteur y déambule dans un labyrinthe de questions entre lesquelles éclosent parfois inattendus, de ténus émerveillements. Au jour le jour, des notules, des observations, des sensations, des réactions à l'actualité se conjuguent avec des souvenirs d'enfance, ceux qui ont fait de lui un lecteur puis un "graphomane". L'écriture de René Pons est exigeante, refusant bavardages et concessions, cultivant le mot juste et un certain humour au service d'une lucidité à l'écart de toute complaisance.

Une jeune femme, prénommée Victoire, découvre un matin son ami Félix mort près d'elle dans son lit. Elle ne se souvient pas de ce qui est arrivé, mais elle file, dans le Sud-Ouest, en emportant ses économies. Sa fugue va durer un an, d'où le titre. Au début, tout va bien. Elle loue une villa au Pays basque, se trouve un amant. Mais l'amant lui vole ses sous et Victoire va parcourir une à une les étapes de la dégringolade sociale : après la villa, les chambres d'hôtel, de plus en plus miteuses, puis la belle étoile ; le vélo, puis l'auto-stop et, quand elle est devenue trop sale, trop dépenaillée pour le stop, la marche au hasard, l'association avec d'autres clochards, le chapardage, la promiscuité, la perte progressive de soi et du monde. L'histoire d'une errance en forme de descente, une aventure picaresque que l'auteur achève en la ramenant à son point de départ. Un an, dans sa simplicité linéaire, immédiate, met en valeur la poétique d'Echenoz. Celle-ci repose sur le combat perpétuel que se livrent une réalité mystérieuse et dont le sens fuit sans cesse le monde, les objets, les personnes, les formes, les sons, les paroles, l'espace, le temps et les mots pour la dire le plus exactement possible.

Agatha Christie (1890-1976) was an inveterate user of proverbs in her fictional writings, the sales of which number in excess of one billion. An active writer for fifty-four years, Christie used proverbs in a manner that both reflected and shaped contemporary British speech. This lexicographical book examines 3,290 proverbs and proverbial sayings uttered by 785 characters in sixty-six novels, 142 short stories, seventeen dramas, and six romances. The author's premise is that Christie modeled all her fictional works on the well-made play formula and that proverbs are employed not in isolation, but as a function of plot, character, and thought. In addition to an introductory essay, the book contains a list of the distribution of Christie's proverbs according to title, a keyword index with citations of standard authorities, and an appendix containing six statistical tables.

Clashing Cultures is an anthropological study of the Annang, an ethnic people of Southern Nigeria. The book provides a succinct historical and ethnographic description of the impacts of various cultural and religious influences upon the Annang people and the transformations that have taken place as a result. The consideration of Christianity's influence on the Annang is part of the broader historical and anthropological picture. Although it is an academic work, Clashing Cultures is also a living text. It reflects the evolving culture of the Annang regarding issues such as marriage, male/female roles and supernatural beliefs. The book deals with ritual as a practice that produces meaning, by means of images and metaphors in an unfolding drama. It looks at how the Annang extract meaning from themselves, their bodies, their gestures, their actions in social, spatial and historical contexts. The book creates a "time-oriented anthropology" in which local processes are mirrored in the context of larger ones.

Canonical Marriage Preparation in the Igbo Tradition in the Light of Canon 1063 of the 1983 Code of Canon Law
The Igboman who embraces Christianity wants to remain a Christian without rejecting his Igbo identity and culture. In view of this, there is an urgent need to foster and promote marriage preparation in Igboland as a way of rediscovering the Christian and traditional values of marriage as an institution. This aims at providing the ambience and opportunity for prospective couples to establish successful marriages and their stability in Igboland. In this regard, as an implementation to its renewed meaning and understanding of marriage, the Church recognizes the necessity for effective and adequate marriage preparation and pastoral care of marriage. The study attempts to give the influence of theological and canonical enrichments in the meaning and understanding of the matrimonial sacrament upon the legal provisions, guidelines and programs for marriage preparation in the Igbo dioceses of Nigeria.

Philip Freneau- Tomo Cheeki, the Creek Indian in Philadelphia
Philip Freneau (1752-1832) was one of the first Americans to gain wide recognition as a writer. He is generally remembered as the "father of American poetry," but his prose writings have not always received the attention they deserve. As the editor of three important papers in the late 18th century (The National Gazette. The Jersey Chronicle, and The Time-Piece and Literary Companion) and as a contributor to many others, Freneau produced a large number of political and literary essays. The "Tomo Cheeki Essays", which were published in 1795 and in 1797, constitute an excellent example of Freneau's prose work. These pseudo-autobiographical accounts of an Indian visiting a city of the Whites are based upon the model of the European "oriental tale," while simultaneously incorporating American subject matter. The essays are representative of a decisive period of American literary history, since they reveal both Freneau's indebtedness to European culture and his role in the process of overcoming this indebtedness in the beginning creation of an independent national literature. The present edition provides the first complete and separate modern collection of the essays, which gives the reader an opportunity to get acquainted with an important example of early American prose writing that has been virtually inaccessible up to now.
