Nos terres promises Tome 2 : Hosanna in excelsis
Hosanna in excelsis, le deuxième opus de Nos terres promises, commence en 1926 quand Santa revient à Marseille après avoir enterré son frère et sa mère et quitté son amant pour qui elle éprouvait un véritable amour. Noël tente par tous les moyens de la reconquérir. Orso s'engage dans la lutte sans merci contre la mafia corso-marseillaise dirigée par les gangsters Spirito et Carbone, avec comme cible prioritaire : leur projet "d'autoroute de l'héroïne" destinée à relier Marseille aux Etats-Unis d'Amérique. Il s'engage également avec son ami Salomon dans la lutte contre l'antisémitisme qui ne cesse de monter depuis le triomphe nazi en Allemagne. Au fil des pages, les caractères des héros s'étoffent : Charles se libère de ses "chaînes" quand sa mère décède et peut enfin se réaliser pleinement, en militant aux côtés de Simon Sabiani qui dérive peu à peu vers le fascisme. Santa et Cristina s'émancipent en participant à la lutte pour le droit de vote des femmes puis en venant en aide aux réfugiés juifs et espagnols. Salomon affirme sa volonté de créer un foyer juif en Palestine malgré l'hostilité des peuples arabes. Dans ce récit aux rebondissements incessants se mêlent la grande histoire à celle, souvent tragique, de nos protagonistes. Une histoire dont la Corse reste bien sûr le coeur, notamment quand Orso est envoyé dans son île pour participer à la campagne de débanditisation de 1931.

In media vita. Suivi de La dernière porte
Les deux textes ici rassemblés, "La dernière porte" et In media vita, ont été publiés une première fois à plus de trente années d'intervalle. Le premier est sous-tendu par la révolte, si ce n'est la colère, le second par la mélancolie. L'un relate l'expérience de la captivité, l'autre celle de la défaite. Mais tous deux disent l'expérience qu'un homme peut faire de la guerre lorsqu'elle devient la façon dont l'historique s'introduit dans l'existentiel. Développant ainsi une méditation de l'expérience ce processus de traversée, Henri Maldiney se confronte ici au sens de l'apprentissage par l'épreuve autant que de la puissance de l'affect. C'est pourquoi ces deux textes ont en commun d'être écrits à la première personne : quel serait en effet le sens d'une épreuve qui ne nous affecterait pas ? Et pour autant, c'est bien philosophiquement que cette épreuve s'énonce, obligeant alors le penseur à trouver les ressources conceptuelles pour la dire, autant qu'à penser le concept de sorte qu'il laisse place à l'épreuve du pâtir.

The Church of Constantinople in the Nineteenth Century
Ivan Sokolov's work, first published in 1904, begins with a balanced overview of the situation of the Orthodox Church under Ottoman rule from the fall of Constantinople (1453) to the beginning of the nineteenth century. The author then gives a detailed description of the external situation of the Patriarchate of Constantinople from 1789 to 1900. This is followed by a discussion of the career and activity of each patriarch during this period, their relations with the bishops, their initiatives in the field of education, their regulations concerning marriage, and their work with parishes and monasteries. The book concludes with a thorough analysis of the administration of the Patriarchate during these years. Although written over a hundred years ago, this classic work has not been superseded. It is based on original sources, particularly on the patriarchal archives, to which few scholars have had access. No other existing study deals with the nineteenth-century Ecumenical Patriarchate in such a systematic and specific way. It constitutes an invaluable tool of reference. Translated from the Russian.

Indigenization of Language in the African Francophone Novel : A New Literary Canon discusses the question of indigenization in the African Francophone novel. Analyzing the prose narratives of Nazi Boni, Ahmadou Kourouma, and Patrice Nganang, this book contends that African literature written in European languages is primarily a creative translation process. Recourse to European languages as a medium of expressing African imagination, worldview, and cultures in fictional writing poses problems of intelligibility. Developed to express and reflect Western worldviews and sensibilities, European languages are employed by African writers to convey messages that seem to be at variance with European imagination. These writers find themselves writing in languages they wish to subvert through the technique of literary indigenization. The significance of this study resides in its raising awareness to the hurdles that literary creativity in a polyglossic context may present to readers and translators. This book provides answers to intriguing questions centering on the problematic of translation in contemporary African literature. It is a contribution to current research aimed at unraveling the conundrum surrounding the language question in African Europhone fiction, particularly the cultural functions of translation in literature. Potential translation problems have to be addressed in order to make African literature written in European languages intelligible to global readership. With the advent of globalization, transcultural communication has become an activity of enormous importance to the international community. It is a subject of great interest to translators, linguists, language instructors, and literary theorists.

Les Etats-Unis forment une civilisation singulière, sans équivalent, profondément religieuse. Cette nation, emportée par sa croyance en une mission démocratique envers le reste du monde, nous devient toujours plus impénétrable. Le pouvoir politique sous le contrôle vigilant du peuple et des médias, l'économie dictée par une concurrence sans relâche, l'intégration volontariste des minorités ethniques et de millions d'immigrés, l'enthousiasme des Eglises, les ligues morales et les mouvements de rébellion, la violence et sa répression obéissent à des principes qui n'ont pas cours en Europe. Le malentendu transatlantique n'est donc pas près de se dissiper, quels que soient les aléas de la politique intérieure et des conflits mondiaux. Mais ce livre qui en rend compte est avant tout le récit d'un voyage, émaillé de figures célèbres ou inconnues, et une méditation de l'auteur, commencée à l'âge des premiers charters, en 1962, et poursuivie jusqu'en 2004 dans l'Amérique de Bush et de Kerry. Guy Sorman, qui nous fit découvrir en 1983 la révolution conservatrice américaine et le reaganisme, enrichit ici sa description des Etats-Unis : si proches de nous en apparence, en vérité si exotiques.

Qui voudrait entretenir une relation dans laquelle il ne pourra être heureux. Le mariage est une union à vie. Quand nous ménageons nos efforts nous avons un foyer béni, paisible et reposant. L'apport de nouvelles méthodes de détection moléculaire - immunocytologie, autoradiographie, hybridation in situ -, a donné un nouvelle essor à la microscopie électronique, permettant d'atteindre l'organisation tridimensionnelle et l'échelle moléculaire au sein de la cellule.
La standardisation des méthodes de préparation des échantillons et des outils utilisés pour leur révélation a contribué à l'expansion de ces techniques dont la complémentarité n'est plus à démontrer : l'immunocytologie met en évidence des molécules (antigènes) endogènes ; l'autoradiographie permet de suivre le devenir des molécules exogènes à l'organisme ; l'hybridation in situ révèle un acide nucléique donné, qu'il soit exogène ou endogène.
Cet ouvrage propose diverses applications de ces méthodes, réalisables avec un minimum d'adaptation et présentées selon une progression technologique : de la microscopie optique à la microscopie électronique et aux marquages multiples. Pratique et commenté, il permettra au microscopiste d'aborder sa problématique avec succès.

Concepts of Mass in Contemporary Physics and Philosophy
The concept of mass is one of the most fundamental notions in physics, comparable in importance only to those of space and time. But in contrast to the latter, which are the subject of innumerable physical and philosophical studies, the concept of mass has been but rarely investigated. Here Max Jammer, a leading philosopher and historian of physics, provides a concise but comprehensive, coherent, and self-contained study of the concept of mass as it is defined, interpreted, and applied in contemporary physics and as it is critically examined in the modern philosophy of science. With its focus on theories proposed after the mid-1950s, the book is the first of its kind, covering the most recent experimental and theoretical investigations into the nature of mass and its role in modern physics, from the realm of elementary particles to the cosmology of galaxies.
The book begins with an analysis of the persistent difficulties of defining inertial mass in a noncircular manner and discusses the related question of whether mass is an observational or a theoretical concept. It then studies the notion of mass in special relativity and the delicate problem of whether the relativistic rest mass is the only legitimate notion of mass and whether it is identical with the classical (Newtonian) mass. This is followed by a critical analysis of the different derivations of the famous mass-energy relationship E = mc2 and its conflicting interpretations. Jammer then devotes a chapter to the distinction between inertial and gravitational mass and to the various versions of the so-called equivalence principle with which Newton initiated his Principia but which also became the starting point of Einstein's general relativity, which supersedes Newtonian physics. The book concludes with a presentation of recently proposed global and local dynamical theories of the origin and nature of mass.

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY IN WORLD HISTORY. An introduction
In modern industrial society, the tic between science and technology seems clear, even inevitable. But historically, as James E. McClellan III and Harold Dorn remind us, the connection was far less apparent. For much of human history, technology depended more on the innovation of skilled artisans than it did on the speculation of scientists. Technology as "applied science," the authors argue, emerged relatively recently, as industry and governments began funding scientific research that would lead directly to new or improved technologies. In Science and Technology in World History, McClellan and Dorn offer an introduction to this changing relationship.
McClellan and Dorn review the historical record beginning with the thinking and tool making of prehistoric humans. Neolithic people, for example, developed metallurgy of a sort, using naturally occurring raw copper, and kept systematic records of the moon's phases. Neolithic craftsmen possessed practical knowledge of the behavior of clay, fire, and other elements of their environment, but though they may have had explanations for the phenomena of their crafts, they toiled without any systematic science of materials or the self-conscious application of theory to practice.
Without neglecting important figures of Western science such as Newton and Einstein, the authors demonstrate the great achievements of non-Western cultures. They remind us that scientific traditions took root in China, India, and Central and South America, as well as in a series of Near Eastern empires, during late antiquity and the Middle Ages, including the vast region that formed the Islamic conquest. From this comparative perspective, the authors explore the emergence of Europe as a scientific and technological power. Continuing their narrative through the Manhattan Project, NASA, and modern medical research, the authors weave the converging histories of science and technology into an integrated, perceptive, and highly readable narrative.

National Olympic Games were more closely connected with the Ancient Greek ideal than the modern international Olympic Games of de Coubertin. Moreover, such national or regional Olympic Games have not only been precursors for the international Olympic Games but also they have been further developed parallel with the international Olympic Movement - even in the 20th century, in Europe, in North and South America and in Asia. In the emerging nation states of Europe, both before as well as after the turn of the century, these national Olympic Games had a more important function (identity-forming) than the Olympic Games.

Mediation - A Necessary Element in Family Dispute Resolution?
Mediation as a method of alternative dispute resolution is gaining increased attention in a growing number of legal areas. In Australian law family counselling was developed to deal with issues related to family disputes. It is brought in prior to court settlement of disputes and thus integrated into the system of conflict resolution. The characteristics and use of alternative dispute resolution call into question the role of the court as the sole forum for institutionalised conflict resolution. For this reason the transferability of the concept of mediation into the German legal system needs to be examined. In particular, it needs to be measured against the yardstick of the German Constitution, which by granting basic substantive and procedural rights, sets out the demands a modern state of law makes on a method of conflict resolution.

The Search for Meaning in the Australian Novel
This thesis grew out of an epistemological interest centered on the search for meaning in literature, and out of a reading of Australian novels. Reaching beyond signification, the creation of meaning in literature refers to the significance a text acquires for the recipient's existence. The potential of this meaningfulness fluctuates between a process of explanation, of uncovering hidden meaning, and deception. Assuming that this range is best demonstrated in the literary treatment of negative experiences in human existence, of pain and suffering, we analyse how Australian novelists and critics set paradigms of meaning against the "Non-Sense" in experienced reality, who and what the agents of meaningfulness in Australian literature are, how they relate to each other and how they affect our reading experience.

Studies in Elizabethan Audience Response to the Theatre
The aim of this volume is to give an analytic description of how Elizabethan Spectators in documentary evidence responded to the theatre performances they watched or knew to be about. It also considers why they responded in that way. Opposing dual consciousness to the reification of the character (its 'ideal presence'), the author concludes that Elizabethan spectators were predominantly interested in the characters' 'ideal presence'. Why they were, is explained by relating their statements to the Renaissance theory of visual perception, (demonic) transformation, and ideas on acting.

The kinetic theory of gases is a most fruitful field for mathematical research. This is evident from the multiplicity of mathematical methods used, the originality of the questions posed and the large number of hitherto unsolved fundamental problems. For example, the question of existence and uniqueness of solutions of various non-linear kinetic equations is still a wide open one. Simplified model equations and various approximations therefore assume considerable significance for the understanding of problem structure and for the solution of practical problems.

Educational Assistance and School Development in Sierra Leone
The subject of foreign assistance in education for developing countries has gained increasing importance in the last twenty years. The fact that the efforts of both donors and recipients of assistance have not been entirely satisfying has resulted in repeated appeals for intensified scientific investigation into this area. This study represents a response to those appeals from the point of view of an educationist from a recipient country (Sierra Leone).Using historical and field investigations, case studies of three representative agencies were conducted between 1988 and 1989 : a multilateral (UNESCO), a bilateral (British) and a private (Baptist Church).The results indicate that both the approach and goals of aid agencies as well as the degree of involvement of target groups leave a lot to be desired. On the basis of these results, recommendations are made for future cooperation.
