Visual Aids in the Productions of the First Piscator-Bühne 1927-28

Alfred Sisley is now recognized as one of the great landscape painters of the nineteenth century, and a leading figure in the Impressionist movement. He divided his time between France and England, and the 55 colour illustrations in this book include the celebrated snow scenes of the Paris suburbs, his views of the flooded Seine at Port-Marly and his paintings of the colourful regattas on the Thames which Kenneth Clark described as embodying 'the perfect moment of Impressionism'. Richard Shone has completely updated his essay, first published in 1979, and selected new colour plates and added extensive commentaries on the illustrations to make this book an ideal introduction to the work of Alfred Sisley. Tiepolo in Milan : The Lost Frescoes of Palazzo Archinto brings together preparatory drawings and paintings, as well as documentary photographs, to commemorate an extraordinary fresco cycle by the Venetian painter Giambattista Tiepolo (1696-1770). Painted for Palazzo Archinto in Milan, the frescoes were destroyed in a bombing during World War II. The catalogue accompanies an exhibition at The Frick Collection. In 1730-31, Tiepolo undertook his first significant project outside the Veneto, frescoes for five ceilings in Palazzo Archinto in Milan. The paintings were commissioned by Count Carlo Archinto (1670-1732), likely in honor of the marriage of his son, Filippo, to Giulia Borromeo. Tiepolo's mythological and allegorical scenes-Triumph of Arts and Sciences ; Apollo and Phaëton ; Perseus and Andromeda ; Juno, Fortune, and Venus ; and Nobility-were painted in some of the largest rooms of the palazzo. Unfortunately, the palazzo was bombed during World War II and its interior completely destroyed. Only a series of black-and-white photographs, taken between 1897 and the late 1930s, preserves the frescoes' appearance, but a number of preparatory drawings and paintings provide precious information, including three painted sketches (Triumph of Arts and Sciences, the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, Lisbon ; Apollo and Phaëton, Los Angeles County Museum ; and Perseus and Andromeda, The Frick Collection). Three drawings from the British Museum in London, the Museo Civico in Trieste, and the Sinebrychoff Art Museum in Helsinki are the only related graphic works. These-along with other drawings and prints by Tiepolo and some books- have been reunited for the first time in order to bring to life these extraordinary works of art. On view at The Frick Collection from April 16 to July 14, 2019, the exhibition is curated by Xavier F. Salomon, Peter Jay Sharp Chief Curator at the Frick, with Andrea Tomezzoli, Professor at the University of Padua, and Denis Ton, Curator of the Musei Civici in Belluno. Included in the publication are essays on Tiepolo's work in Palazzo Archinto (Salomon), on the role of the frescoes in Tiepolo's career (Tomezzoli), on the intellectual world of the Archinto family (Ton), and on the architectural history of the palace (Kluzer).

Claire Vial : Clothing the debate : textiles, text-isles and the economy of gift-giving in four Middle English Breton lays Textiles, both as clothes and elements of the codified knightly costume, play a major structuring role in the Breton lays. Whether embodied in recurring poetic motives or staged in descriptive pauses, these text-isles, or recognisable textual islands, contribute to the spiralling aesthetic of the Breton lays with issues of their own, involving narrative and character development, processes of social signposting and potential theatricality. Denis LAGAE-DEVOLDERE : "Nothing of what is writ" (4. 2. 199) : silenced texts in Measure for Measure Focussing on an aspect often neglected by critics, this paper suggests a word-by-word exploration into the trajectory of the various written texts, letters or "writs" in Measure for Measure. With the New Historicism notion of negotiable, volatile authority/auctoriality, this is an attempt at probing into the political and dramatic consequences of the letter-writing activity and its implications on the ever slippery notion of truth. Such "writs" are turned into instruments of manipulation, and deceit, which defy reason, and call for what one could call blind faith, from both the characters on stage and the off-stage audience. En s'intéressant à un aspect souvent négligé par la critique, cet article propose une analyse détaillée de la trajectoire des messages écrits dans Measure for Measure. Guyonne Leduc : The dramatic import of letters within letters in Frances Burney's Evelina (1778) That no attention has been paid to the rather numerous letters within letters in this epistolary novel might seem surprising for any critic studying Evelina. Yet a careful reading of those letters within letters, that seem to pass unnoticed in a novel where sight is the most important of the five senses and where the (mis) interpretation of signs is central, proves rewarding if only from a dramatic viewpoint. Indeed, some of those (enclosed, copied, mentioned, commented upon, etc.) letters within the letters collected by the "editor" trigger not just one of the two plots (the quest for Evelina's name and, at least, social identity) but also changes in geographical places, new turns in the two plots (the second one being the love plot), a comic episode, etc. If some of them thwart the reader's expectations, all of them make it possible to approach one of the key issues broached in the novel. Les lettres dans les lettres, pourtant assez nombreuses dans ce roman épistolaire, n'ont pas retenu l'attention, ce qui peut paraître étonnant pour quiconque étudie Evelina. Jean-François BAILLON : Tableaux vivants, still lives : tracing Terence Davies in The House of Mirth (2000) This article attempts to trace the presence of Terence Davies as author of The House of Mirth through three distinct but concurrent strategies. First, the recurrent use of symmetrical patterns at every level appears to link the film to Davies's previous output and signals the presence of a mega-narrator. Secondly, the structuring reference to classical Hollywood melodrama can be referred both to Davies's previous films and to his own personal taste. It is also a way for him to claim his attitude to the source material as fundamentally cinematic. Lastly, self-referential scenes at key moments in the narrative foreground the nature of the film as artefact. Cet article tente de repérer les traces de la présence de l'auteur Terence Davies dans The House of Mirth au moyen de trois procédures distinctes mais convergentes. Cet article ­s'attache à montrer comment cette condition première de l'écriture conduisit la poète américaine à inscrire les grandes séquences poétiques que sont Helen in Egypt et Trilogy dans l'intervalle qui à la fois relie et sépare les modes épique et lyrique. En dépit de l'ordre de composition de ces deux recueils - le premier étant postérieur de dix ans au second - la récriture du mythe qu'est Helen in Egypt, transposant l'épopée sur un mode lyrique, est ici envisagée comme le creuset dans lequel se forge l'écriture de Trilogy : événement traumatique à maints égards pour H. D. to pitch the tone of her war-related poetic sequences-Helen in Egypt and Trilogy-in the middle ground between the epic and the lyric. In spite of the chronological order of composition of these two books, the first written some ten years after the second, I contend that H. D. 's re-writing of the Helen story, transposing it from the epic to the lyric, can be understood as the crucible in which the materials for Trilogy are melted. For indeed, H. D. can deal with the traumatic event of the war, which so deeply affected her imagination, only by going against the current of time, according to a logic of the aftershock (Nachträglichkeit) which is structurally implicit in the way she intertwines Greek myth with twentieth-century history. The poetic persona which H. D. creates as a speaker in Trilogy, both transpersonal and intimate, may thus be seen as an attempt on her part to mediate and articulate trauma. The American park movement has been extensively studied and historicized since the beginning of the 1970s, but its origins have been little documented or analyzed. It is understood as resulting from the combined action of three factors : urbanization and industrialization, development of tourism and leisure, evolving perceptions of nature. This paper examines the limits of such interpretations on the period immediately preceding the foundation of the first parks and studies the contribution of rural cemeteries to the park movement. Andrew DIAMOND : Cutting through the "Fog of War" : World War II and the fracturing of the New Deal order in the urban North While the New Deal created a new relationship between ordinary citizens and the federal government with its work relief programs, welfare system, and laws protecting organized labor, this relationship began to sour in a northern wartime context marked by massive black migration, widespread racial conflict, and increasingly militant civil rights organizations. Pressured by black mobilization and the outbreak of violent civil disorders in major war production centers between 1941 and 1943, federal, state, and city authorities moved to create a range of race relations organizations devoted to fighting racial discrimination and fostering interracial cooperation. These organizations, some which were of a quasi-official nature, quickly became fixtures on the local political scene, playing active roles in countering the campaigns of whites to keep blacks out of their neighborhoods and to retain the privileges of whiteness at work. What follows constitutes an attempt to understand how white residents and workers perceived and responded to these new race relations organizations. I will argue that in the eyes of average white residents and workers whose interests seemed to run up against them, the proliferation of these organizations worked to recast the role of the state from protector of the working man to protector of black rights, thereby fracturing the young New Deal order. Queen Vispa and King Dungammei are the beloved rulers of their respective kingdoms. The two territories live in harmony, sharing a temple that crosses their mutual border, but they pray to different gods and have little in common outside of geography. The monarchs seem an unlikely pair, but when each violates the rules of the temple - one by entering the temple as a woman, and the other by praying to the other kingdom's god - both find themselves abandoned by their people, deciding soon after to declare the approval and presence of both gods in their hearts, as well as their love for each other. The King and Queen's subjects also abandon the shared temple, leaving it to the disobedient pair and building separate temples in their own territories. The monarchs' happy life together is, however, short-lived, as Queen Vispa dies upon giving birth to their child Delarai. The King is urged to repent and return to his kingdom. He complies, leaving princess Delarai with Magi, a nurse from a remote village, to raise her. Delarai rows up in near isolation, far from other people, spending most of her time among flowers and animals of the beautiful temple garden. Meanwhile, battles rage between the two kingdoms following the King's return. Delaware, a son begotten to the King and his next wife, gets badly wounded some years later in an attempt to stop the fighting. On his deathbed, the Prince insists on being taken to the forbidden temple to be buried there. The King, though ill himself, agrees to fulfill his son's dying wish. It is there where Delarai, having become quite an expert at herbal remedies, comes to their aid, preparing a special potion while praying to the temple's two gods in her nurse Magi's native language. As Delarai completes the life-saving act of curing the Prince, she tries to call for Magi, but the word that leaves her lips is "magic". Those who witness the event soon spread the word, and Delarai becomes recognized across both kingdoms as the creator of magic. The King, however, succumbs to old age, imparting his last kernel of wisdom unto his daughter : the two temple gods are one and the same. With this knowledge and their newfound inner strength, Delarai and Delaware unify the two kingdoms, and live happily ever after.

In order to cope with health problems in developing or developed countries, means have to be tested before preventive, promotive and curative measures can be implemented on a nationwide basis by health authorities. Problems and constraints of such intervention trials seem to be similar in developing and developed countries although there are differences in the disease patterns. In the near future, especially the Asian countries will be facing similar health problems as the western countries, in addition to their present problems. Scientists from various Asian countries and the Federal Republic of Germany discussed intervention measures in the field of health delivery system, family planning, parasite control, mother and child health care as well as nutrition.

Eclairé par cette nouvelle expérience, il a travaillé le dessin, la sculpture et la vidéo dont le fil rouge est la relation au milieu. L’oeuvre, fondée sur l’économie du geste et sur une observation affinée qui se joue des échelles, s’apparente à une opération de dévoilement de la réalité dans ses dimensions sensibles et cognitives. Au cours de ses voyages, Olivier Leroi réalise des «oeuvres vécues» avec les habitants des lieux traversés et en témoigne par des photographies et des performances filmées : Première neige au pays dogon (Mali), El Zorro blanco (Mexique), La brigade de Chambord ou encore Bruno, l’âne et les papillons. Cet ouvrage a donc été conçu comme un voyage, on pourrait dire un «forage» dans une oeuvre qui se développe depuis une trentaine d’années. Migrant Memories provides an innovative perspective on the power of cultural memory and the influence of cinema on the Italian diaspora in Britain. Based on extensive interviews with Southern Italian migrants and their children, this study offers a fresh understanding of the migrants' journey from Italy to Britain since the early 1950s. The volume examines how the experience of contemporary Italian identity has been mediated through film, photography and popular culture through the generations. Beginning with an analysis of the films of Frank Capra and Anthony Minghella, the book goes on to address the popular melodramas of Raffaello Matarazzo and ultimately argues that cinema, and the memory of it, had a significant influence on the identity formation of first-generation Italians in Britain. Coupled with this analysis of cinema's relationship to migration, the cultural memory of the Italian diaspora is explored through traditions of education, religion, marriage and cuisine. The volume highlights the complexities of cultural history and migration at a time when debates about immigration in Britain have become politically and culturally urgent.

Renowned to this day for its Sanctuary of Apollo, the island of Delos was a flourishing trading port in antiquity that drew both Greeks and foreigners to its shores for commercial purposes. Many exotic deities - some hailing from the east and others, introduced by the Italian community, from the west - were worshipped on the island. Among these foreign divinities, the Egyptian gods figured prominently, and their first appearance can be dated to the 3rd century BC. The spread of Egyptian-Greek cults beyond the Nile Valley favoured the worship of the goddess Isis. While the goddess was the object of great devotion on Delos as elsewhere, it was actually the god Sarapis who was at the centre of a pantheon forming a triad with Isis and Anubis, joined by Harpocrates, Ammon and Osiris.

Venetian Disegno : New Frontiers circa 1420 to 1620 takes disegno as its central theme, that in its plurality of meaning allows for a consideration of the conceptual role of design and the act of drawing. The relationship between disegno and Renaissance Venetian art has historically been a problematic one, with emphasis instead being placed on the Venetian predilection for colore. This volume is reflective of an ongoing challenge to this perspective and draws attention to the importance of Venetian disegno and the study of drawings for understanding various art forms. The book commences with a critical study of what constitutes disegno in Venetian art. It does so through questioning the historiography of Venetian artistic scholarship and the restrictive framework and preconceptions that have emerged before setting out the merits of a broader, more inclusive approach. Disegno is applied in its multifaceted nature to address the physical act of drawing, the tangible drawn object and the role of design in artistic practice. The term 'Venetian' is taken to encompass both Venice and its mainland territories not least because of the mobility of artists across and beyond the region. Contributions are divided into five thematic sections. The first, entitled 'Peripheries', frames the art of Venice within a wider discourse on the movement of ideas across and beyond the Veneto in locations including Padua, Verona and Rome. A section on Media considers the origins and innovations that took place in the use of materials such as blue paper, oil and coloured chalks. In another, the theories that have developed on Venetian notions of disegno are brought under scrutiny, addressing topics such as the long upheld perspective that Venetian artists did not draw, the role of sculpture in Tintoretto's drawing practice and the interrelation between the written and drawn line in Palma Giovane's draftsmanship. The section on Invention reflects on the technical innovations that were facilitated through the uptake of printmaking and the intellectual freedom granted by humanist patrons. Finally, Function gets to the heart of the practical purpose of disegno. Contributions focus on the workshops of the Bellini family and Titian to consider the diverse ways they used drawing within their artistic practices with an emphasis on technical analysis. These sections are all preceded by introductions that provide an overview on each theme while the volume is bookended by two reflections on the state of research into Venetian disegno and the potential for further progress. Un propylône introduit, dès le début du premier millénaire de notre ère, le complexe religieux de Médamoud, sur lequel s'appuie une enceinte datée d'Auguste par une stèle commémorative.
