Five months later, some 25, 000 men followed in their footsteps and landed on the same shores, codenamed Gold Beach. Barely had they landed, the British troops set out to building an artificial harbour, undoubtedly one of the finest technical feats of the Second World War. Mon extra grand frère
Mon Extra grand-frère évoque avant tout l'amour qui existe entre une petite soeur et son grand frère, un frère différent, tombé d'une étoile. A peine a-t-il monté son cabinet à Mobile que l'avocat Tom McInnes est rappelé à Coopers Bend, petite ville de l'Alabama, où son jeune frère, Hall, vient de se noyer dans des circonstances troublantes. De fait, il l'apprend vite, il y a bel et bien eu meurtre, mais incompétence, crainte ou désir de ne pas faire de vagues, le shérif local ne semble guère pressé de découvrir l'assassin. Aussi bien Hall était-il un vaurien qui pariait de grosses sommes auprès de bookmakers liés aux milieux touches de La Nouvelle-Orléans. Seul un certain Gerrard, " l'homme le plus dangereux " de la région, a l'air de savoir ce qui s'est vraiment passé. Mais donnant donnant : Tom ne pourra connaître la vérité que s'il accepte des conditions qui n'ont rien de très honnête. Pris au piège, Tom se lance dans une enquête dont il sortira plus que meurtri.

Deux frères, issus de la petite bourgeoisie, Arno et Vincent, pareillement élevés dans le respect des mots pourtant tout les oppose. Vincent, désormais " trader ", adore les signes extérieurs de la réussite, les objets onéreux, les amours tarifées. Arno, le frère aîné, écrivain, est l'espion, le délateur, le juge aux affaires familiales. Jusqu'au jour où la maladie neurologique de leur père les incite à renouer l'impossible dialogue au chevet d'un homme qui ne parvient plus à assembler les lettres. C'est alors comme s'ils se perdaient dans le labyrinthe de leurs émotions d'enfants. Alternant le ton d'un comique sans illusions qui montre les humains menés par leurs vices, le sexe et l'argent, avec l'écriture d'une tragédie intime, détournant pour mieux s'en moquer les codes de l'autofiction, Karine Tuil a composé un fort habile livre gigogne, tout en dévoilements et en fausses surprises, qui puise sa force au plus profond de la haine comme de l'amour.

"Je m'étais cru original. Je compris à San Francisco combien sommaire et timoré avait été mon football de table. Encore ignorais-je qu'à ce moment-là, Kerouac, alcoolique en sursis dans sa petite maison à l'autre bout des Etats-Unis, repoussant les toqués de clochards célestes et d'anges vagabonds, tapait encore sans témoins son carton personnel. Jusqu'à la fin, attendant la mort les cartes à la main, il pratiqua ce complexe jeu d'enfant. Sa vie durant (courte vie), il transporta partout ses fiches bariolées, répertoriant les prouesses, les fiascos, les classements provisoires ou définitifs de toutes ses équipes et de tous ses joueurs, comme pour obéir au poète Ramos Rosa : "T'entourer de noms et te perdre"." Un Breton de Marseille fait irruption dans la vie et dans l'oeuvre de Jack Kerouac. Adrien Le Bihan qui, enfant, pratiqua des jeux pareils à ceux de Jack, qui partage avec lui la folie des noms, court sur ses traces de sa ville natale à Baltimore et San Francisco, de New York à Tanger et Paris, interrogeant les livres qu'il a lus, les océans où il a navigué, les dictionnaires qu'il a explorés, le crime qui l'a marqué. Interprétant avec lui les voix de la mer, il rapproche les branches de leurs arbres généalogiques, leurs fictions familiales et, résolvant quelques énigmes, s'émeut de découvrir en Jack Kerouac un héros plus fraternel qu'il n'osait l'espérer.

Mon frère le Carso
Livre majeur d'un poète mort jeune, Il mio Carso (Mon Karst), publié en 1912 et traduit en 1921 par Benjamin Crémieux sous le titre de Mon frère le Carso, évoque le haut-plateau calcaire qui fait le lien autour de Trieste entre le nord-est italien et le nord-ouest croate. Région à la végétation dense et au relief remarquable, le karst, ou carso, a fasciné Slataper qui en a fait un décor envoûtant. Au même titre que Italo Svevo, Umberto Saba ou Claudio Magris, Scipio Slataper est un enfant de Trieste, le plus grand port de l'Adriatique. Une ville que l'on a souvent comparé à une Dublin du sud, et l'on ne s'étonne pas de l'immense poésie qu'a produit ce lieu. C'est la ville du "si" , du "ja" et du "da" disait Scipio Slataper, dans ses chroniques. Nous aimons Trieste pour l'âme tourmentée qu'elle nous a donnée, écrivait encore l'auteur... Il mio Carso, publié à la Libreria della Voce en 1912, est son oeuvre la plus importante, le seul roman de sa brève carrière littéraire, prématurément interrompue par la guerre. Il s'agit d'un parcours au ton lyrique qui forge ce que l'on peut nommer son autobiographie intellectuelle et morale - le livre est prémonitoire puisqu'il paraît onze ans avant La Conscience de Zéno de Svevo (1923) ! D'une écriture d'une grande douceur, le récit témoigne du cheminement de l'auteur, exalté tel un artiste en devenir, confiant en ses capacités et en son égo. Le narrateur sera foudroyé par le suicide de son amante, Anna Pulitzer. Ravagé, il est alors amené à s'interroger sur son existence et à souhaiter un cadre existentiel bâti sur des principes plus essentiels. La portée du livre est importante : en 1921, il est traduit en français par Benjamin Crémieux, collaborateur fameux de la revue Europe alors naissante.

Enlèvement demandé Persuadé que son ami Canard tient le coup du siècle pour se faire de l'argent facile, Antoine réquisitionne l'aide de Jean-Jacques, ancien collègue et compagnon de galère. Leur plan ? Enlever Julien, jumeau d'un célèbre milliardaire résidant dans une maison de santé, l'embarquer en Suisse, usurper l'identité de son frère et escroquer la banque en récupérant un joli pactole. Un plan simple, sans armes et sans violence, promis juré ! D'abord sceptique, Jean-Jacques, aux abois depuis que sa femme l'a mis à la porte après une énième tromperie, accepte. Mais flanqué de ces deux bras cassés, ce dernier va devoir prendre les choses en main s'il veut une chance de réussir. Pour commencer, il leur faut de l'argent et ça, aucun d'eux n'en a. Qui mieux que le riche psychologue de la maison de santé pour apporter le capital de départ ? Evidemment, rien ne se passe comme prévu et l'improbable trio enchaîne les bévues. Ce qui ressemblait au plan parfait vire au fiasco quand la police se lance à la recherche de Julien. Après le maîtrisé et raffiné Torrentius, Colin Thibert revient à contrepied avec une comédie façon Pieds-Nickelés ou La Grande Vadrouille, aussi drôle que riche en rebondissements.

Zacarias Moussaoui, mon frère
Le 14 septembre 2001, la vie d'Abd Samad Moussaoui bascule. Il apprend que son frère cadet, Zacarias, arrêté aux Etats-Unis en août 2001, est soupçonné par les autorités américaines d'être impliqué dans les attentats du 11 septembre. Abd Samad Moussaoui explique dans ce livre le parcours de son frère. Les stigmates d'une jeunesse difficile, une soif de reconnaissance inassouvie, un sentiment de révolte face à des comportements d'exclusion trop courants et l'expérience du déracinement à Londres sont les éléments les plus saillants d'une dérive d'une dérive qui s'est terminée avec l'arrestation et l'inculpation de Zacarias Moussaoui. Plus globalement, il importait aussi à Abd Samad Moossaoui d'exposer comment, selon lui, les idéologues de l'extrémisme - en rupture totale avec le monde musulman - tentent d'imposer leur falsification de l'islam. Et leurs tentatives pour s'emparer d'une jeunesse, à l'image de celle de son frère.

La simplicité fervente des mots, l'éclat précis de la comparaison donnent le ton de ce livre et en font deviner la substance : c'est à Jeanne, sa soeur, que s'adresse Georges Séféris, et lui, l'écrivain consacré par le prix Nobel, l'auteur de ces poèmes "écrits dans la vraie couleur, mais enveloppés d'une brume" (Yves Bonnefoy), que les lecteurs français ont découverts en 1963, murmure familièrement sa gratitude envers celle qui a partagé ses grands secrets torturants, chancelé comme lui aux malheurs de l'histoire et aux souffrances de la Grèce, accompagné, dans la plus tendre sollicitude, son effort pour atteindre à l'essentiel et aller au plus loin. Dans ce journal à deux voix, livre d'heures où s'inscrivent, avant la gloire, deux vies parallèles, nous découvrons véritablement Georges Séféris ; au coeur souriant du quotidien ou dans les bouleversements du monde, il est celui qui "ferme les yeux, cherchant le lieu secret où les eaux se croisent sous la glace."

Je ne rédige pas un essai, ni un ouvrage de critique. J'écris de cœur, dans une intimité trouble qui fut la nôtre, depuis le jour de notre rencontre. C'est à toi que je m'adresse, Fédor. Que pourrais-je donc t'apprendre sur toi-même ? Ceci, peut-être, qu'un écrivain ne s'appartient pas : tu vis mêlé à mon sang, tes questions sont inscrites dans mes neurones. Tu n'as jamais été un modèle au sens où un artisan dérive de ses maîtres ; tu es mieux que cela : tu es un souffle que j'aspire. Je n'aime pas tous tes livres, je ne suis pas un dévot. Tu demeures cependant étroitement lié à ma vie, si bien qu'à l'instant d'écrire, je dois chaque fois me situer par rapport à toi, établir la bonne distance.
Je suis, Fédor, l'une de tes créatures. J'ai commencé par être un de ces enfants stupéfaits qui hantent tes livres. Je t'ai rencontré vers treize quatorze ans, à Barcelone, mais je t'ai reconnu au premier regard parce que je vivais en toi depuis ma naissance.

The Sagho djebel is the eastern extension of the Anti-Atlas, a volcanic mountain with granitic mamelons, basaltic organs, chaos of black shales, pink sandstones... at the gates of the Sahara. As far as the eye can see, large wild, arid spaces. A desolate land made for the lonely DPM. And for a thousand miles around, silence is the only companion. Absolute plenitude and the desire to take to the track. From flat expanses to rolling hills, from sharp relief to steep canyons : pure, original nature. Ochre, pink, brown, violet, the colour chart stretches in a gradation of shimmering pastels, sometimes accompanied by an overwhelming heat. Eldorado in the heart of the desert, rare are the oases ; modest green spots in the infinitely large, they are the reminders that we are on African soil. The wild charm of the Sagho is due to its exceptional geology : high cliffs and steep peaks, tabular escarpments and deep canyons in the middle of which caravans of camels and mules circulate. When you arrive on these immense plateaus, the lunar horizon is so vast that you want to go everywhere at once to see if it is really as beautiful elsewhere ! The Sagho also surprises by the richness of its lights : limpid like those of the nearby Sahara, or sometimes in half-tone, as in the neighbouring Dades valley. The Sagho is also the Morocco of the last Berber nomads, descendants of the ancient lords Aït Atta. In autumn, after leaving the snows of the High Atlas, they set up their dark wool tents on the slopes of the jebel until spring. WHY SEX MATTERS. A Darwinian Look at Human Behavior
Why are men, like other primate usually the aggressors and risk takers? Why do women typically have fewer sexual partners? Why is killing infants routine in some cultures, but forbidden in others? Why is incest everywhere taboo? Bobbi Low ranges from ancient Rome to modern America, from the Amazon to the Arctic, and from single-celled organisms to international politics to show that these and many other questions about human behavior largely come down to evolution and sex. More precisely, as she shows in this uniquely comprehensive and accessible survey of behavioral and evolutionary ecology, they come down to the basic principle that all organisms evolved to maximize their reproductive success and seek resources to do so.
Low begins by reviewing the fundamental arguments and assumptions of behavioral ecology: selfish genes, conflicts of interest, and the tendency for sexes to reproduce through different behaviors. Epilepsy: the invisible pain
They say life is a long stretch of a calm river, but not for everyone ! She was for me until the day when everything rocked, the day my destiny was changed dramatically. People do not realize how life can be so sweet and so beautiful. They complain all day long for trivialities. They are not even aware that they have before their eyes the most beautiful wealth : the luck and happiness of living in good health. I was rich before. Now I am poor because my child has an incurable disease, that has currently no hope of being healed. As a parent, how can we accept that ? , How to continue living carrying the bundle of pain in my head ? , How to overcome this feeling of helplessness ? When I started speaking to my heart, I didn't know myself that this was the beginning of a new life : a rebirth as a poet. When I learnt that my 7-year-old daughter was suffering from the Dravet Syndrome, a rare genetic epileptic encephalopathy, this was like an earthquake in my life. Then, I needed to write in order to express my sorrow and my pain. Words and rhymes came naturally to my mind. This was obvious that poetry would be my survival weapon.

CRASH IN BAYEUX - The Last Flight of Sergeant Ferguson
Normandy, France, January 15, 1943. The weather is clear, the sun is shining. Two Royal Canadian Air Force aircraft fly over the Bayeux-Caen railroad. The target is a German freight train - and its locomotive. Aboard the first Spitfire, Sergeant Ferguson is aligning his gun sights on the target. It is 02 : 30 p. m. This will be his very last flight... HARASSING THE OCCUPYING FORCES TO PREPARE THE INVASION The RAF and RCAF had been flying hundreds of similar sorties over France for months, in order to weaken the German forces, particularly the Luftwaffe. The pilots of No. 401 Squadron were among those who took part in this patient work, made up of constant patrols and attacks. Among the 63 men mentioned in this book, 25 were killed in action between 1942 and 1944. A CRASH THAT AWOKE THE SPIRIT OF RESISTANCE Touched by William Ferguson's sacrifice, some French citizens decided to bury the young Canadian flier with dignity, honour and respect. The Germans took this as a provocation. A few weeks later, the Sipo-SD (the "Gestapo") arrested a dozen of them. They were sent to concentration camps - some of them later died in Büchenwald, Dachau and Mauthausen. Others did survive, including Paul Le Caër.
