La Bataille Loquifer. Studio e edizione critica
La Bataille Loquifer, chanson de geste in décasyllabes rimati ascrivibile ai primi anni del XIII secolo, appartiene al ciclo di Guillaume d'Orange e, insieme al Couronnement Louis, Prise d'Orange, Charroi de Nimes, Aliscans e infine Moniage Rainouart, ne compone il nucleo fondante. L'opera, conservata da dieci manoscritti completi (tutti ciclici) più un frammento della biblioteca di Lisbona, è esponente del gusto tipico dell'"epopea media", che vede la sua affermazione proprio in quegli anni, in cui la presenza del meraviglioso di origine cristiana e soprattutto magica acquista un'importanza sempre maggiore. La canzone racconta delle vicissitudini del gigante Renouart, dopo il suo esordio giovanile sul campo di battaglia di Aliscans, contro i saraceni, del duello con il loro temibile paladino Loquifer - gigante egli stesso - , del suo soggiorno sull'isola di Avalon, dove concepirà un figlio con la fata Morgana e infine il rocambolesco ritorno in terra cristiana. Il presente volume propone la prima edizione propriamente critica della chanson de geste. L'analisi codicologica e ecdotica ivi condotte forniscono una descrizione dettagliata della tradizione manoscritta del testo e delle sue fasi di elaborazione ; inoltre lo studio linguistico, con la speciale attenzione dedicata all'analisi di tipo lessicologico, permette di precisare la lingua dell'autore dell'opera, definendo in maniera più dettagliata la collocazione diatopica e diacronica della Bataille Loquifer.

Carmelo Bene. L'originale è infedele alla copia
Carmelo Bene (1937- 2002), poeta, attore, regista, drammaturgo, scrittore, critico, ha tradotto in performances il continuo processo di risemantizzazione della lingua e della cultura, il loro essere traversate da citazioni invisibili. Le sue opere sono orizzontalmente tessute da fili e fili che si interconnettono in un gioco intertestuale che mette a nudo quanto ogni testo e personaggio non sia che l'integrale degli equivoci che la loro storia vi ha lasciato persistere [parole di Lacan in riferimento alla langue]. Negando ogni logica genealogica, attraverso una pratica filologica à rebours, ha gettato Pentesilea, Salomè, Don Giovanni, Faust, Sade, Lorenzaccio (sono questi i lavori di Carmelo Bene qui analizzati) in sentieri ramificati dove interferiscono personaggi, autori e critica. Carmelo Bene ha messo sé stesso in gioco. Ultimo dandy, con sprezzatura ha modulato argomenti complessi destituendo qualsiasi legittimità a traversare il patrimonio culturale muniti di grammatiche e logiche blindate.

Gelosia del Sole. Edizione critica e commento a cura di Mikaël Romanato, Edition bilingue français-italien
Durant les vingt premières années du XVIe siècle, à la suite de la chute de la dynastie aragonaise, peu d'expériences poétiques parviennent à se cristalliser en un recueil d'une quelque importance, avant et également après la publication des Rime de Sannazaro (1530). La parution, en 1519 à Naples, chez Sigismondo Mayr, de la Gelosia del Sole de Girolamo Britonio est l'un des exemples les plus significatifs car il s'agit d'un recueil, dédié à Vittoria Colonna, formé de 454 poèmes (345 sonnets, 43 chansons, 37 madrigaux, 20 sextines, dont 7 doubles, 7 ballades et 2 compositions en tercets). La présente contribution propose un cadre de l'oeuvre dans cette période de transition et fournit l'édition critique commentée du texte, réalisée à partir de l'édition princeps de 1519.

Le critique africain et son peuple comme producteur de civilisation : The African Critic and His People as Producers of Civilization. Colloque de Yaoundé, 16-20 avril 1793
Ce Colloque sur " Le critique africain et son peuple comme producteur de civilisation " a été organisé à Yaoundé du 16 au 20 avril 1973 par la Société Africaine de Culture et l'Université fédérale de Yaoundé.
Cette réflexion plurielle est inaugurale qui met en chantier, au plan théorique, le domaine de la critique en Afrique Noire. Elle est, au sens large du terme, politique, dans la mesure où elle articule l'exercice critique à l'instance populaire. Elle est, enfin, culturelle, car elle engage le critique africain lié au peuple, dans un projet de civilisation. Telles sont, entre autres, les voies de première importance ouvertes par ce Colloque.

Gustave Moreau. The Fables
Gustave Moreau (1826-1898) is one of the most brilliant and enigmatic artists associated with the French Symbolist movement. This book accompanies an exhibition of some of the most extraordinary works he ever made, unseen in public for over a century. Moreau's watercolours of the Fables of Jean de La Fontaine (1621-1695) were created between 1879 and 1885 for the art collector Antony Roux and their stylistic range encompasses historicism and the picturesque, orientalist fantasies and near-abstract chromatic experiments. They were exhibited to great acclaim in Paris in the 1880s and in London in 1886, where critics compared the artist to Edward Burne-Jones. One critic commented on Moreau's ' keen apprehension of the weird. ' There were originally 64 works in the series, which was subsequently acquired by Miriam Alexandrine de Rothschild (1884-1965), but nearly half were lost during the Nazi era. The surviving works have not been exhibited since 1906 and they have only ever been published in black and white. This book is the first to reproduce them in colour - many shown actual size. Created at the height of the French 19th-century revival of watercolour, the variety of subject matter and technique, their colouristic effects and the sophistication of Moreau's storytelling, will be a revelation to readers. Preparatory drawings for the Fables, including animal studies made from life in the Jardin des Plantes demonstrate the wide-ranging research that informed Moreau's visions. Prints after Moreau's Fables by Félix Bracquemond (1833-1914) translate the jewel-like colours into monochrome in some of the most innovative etchings of the age, while the most delicate effects of the watercolours were also transformed into vitreous enamels. In-depth accounts of each watercolour, explaining the story and exploring Moreau's response to it. The introduction will place the series in the long history of illustrations of La Fontaine's canonical work, whose sources include Aesop's fables and traditional European and Asian tales, as well as considering Moreau in the context of his own, turbulent, times.

Willibald Alexis' Zeitroman «Das Haus Düsterweg» and the «Vormärz»
On publication in 1835 Willibald Alexis' Zeitroman Das Haus Düsterweg sparked controversy only to be subsequently ignored by specialists on the Vormärz (1815-48). It has been viewed as an anomaly in Alexis' literary production, but in fact lies at the core of the intellectual interests and formal experimentation of Alexis, the prominent Vormärz author, theorist, critic and journalist. Based on techniques derived from Walter Scott, it anticipates the theory and practice of Gutzkow's "Roman des Nebeneinander". Under the aspect of Zerrissenheit it records and analyzes the psychological and political agony of the contemporary scene.

Thomas Carlyle 1981
Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881), essayist, biographer, historian, philosopher, translator, literary and social critic, was one of the great intellectual forces of his period, indispensable to our understanding of Victorian Britain and the 19th century in general. Scholars from Canada, France, Germany, Great Britain, Sweden and the United States assembled at the Scottish Studies Centre of the University of Mainz in Germersheim for the International Thomas Carlyle Centenary Symposium 1981. Their papers, published in this volume, open up a new - European - dimension of Carlyle's personality, work and thought. They offer evidence that the subject is not exhausted, quite the reverse, and that in many aspects Carlyle is as topical today as in his own time.

Nikolaj Gumilev and Neoclassical Modernism
Nikolaj Gumilev occupies a paradoxical place within the history of Russian modernism. Although he is well known as the founder of Acmeism and is regarded as an important poet and critic, much of his work is difficult to reconcile with prevailing concepts of modernism. The present study seeks to explain this marginal position by reinterpreting Gumilev's work within the broader context of a modernist aesthetic of order, or "neo-classical modernism." The term refers to an aesthetic line within modernism that sought to reconcile certain features of traditional rhetoric - in particular the triadic style system - with modernist strategies of innovation. Although primarily devoted to Gumilev, the study also touches on Russian and French writers adhering to comparable aesthetic values, among them Annenskij, Kuzmin, Gautier, Leconte de Lisle, Valéry and Gide.

Origin of the Term «Shyster»: Supplementary Information
The present monograph complements Cohen's 1982 study of shyster. The main contributions of his new work are a who's who for the shyster story and a revisionist look at the coiner of the term (Mike Walsh). Scholars are currently agreed that Walsh was a raving, ranting demagogue and a wild-eyed genius whose only contribution was the introduction of gangs into New York City's political process. Cohen argues, however, that Walsh possessed far more humanity (and possibly influence) than his critics have given him credit for. It is noteworthy too that the studies of Walsh and shyster shed light on each other ; neither is complete alone.

This study represents an attempt to assess the critical impact of Dickens' work in Germany from the appearance of The Pickwick Papers till his death in 1870. Its main aim is to place the ongoing engagement of German critics with the English novelist in the context of the social and literary-critical tensions of the time and to bring about a new, more differentiated and penetrating understanding of his influence in these decades. The author argues that all the significant attempts to define the function and possibilities of the contemporary novel in German in this period were linked in one way or another with critical attitudes to the hugely popular, but always intractably controversial work of the English novelist.

The Artist Helen Coombe (1864–1937). The Tragedy of Roger Fry's Wife
This fascinating book presents the ? rst biography of Helen Coombe, a woman admired not only for her artistic skill, but also for her intellect, personality and wit. It reveals her family background and education, her place in the Arts and Crafts Movement and her outstanding artistic output. Helen Coombe was married to Roger Fry, an artist who was to achieve most fame as an art critic, historian and protagonist of the Bloomsbury Group. Soon after their marriage in 1896, she displayed symptoms of schizophrenia. After the ? rst episode, she temporarily resumed her career and had two children with Fry, but for the last thirty years of her life she was sectioned under the Lunacy Act and committed to an institution. This thoroughly researched book makes full use of archival material, including correspondence, diaries and medical records. It illuminates late Victorian and Edwardian society and culture. It throws new light, by no means all of it favourable, on Roger Fry. It is a 'must' for all interested in the Bloomsbury Group, art history, and the handling of mental illness at a time before ef ? cacious antipsychotic drugs were available.

The Search for Meaning in the Australian Novel
This thesis grew out of an epistemological interest centered on the search for meaning in literature, and out of a reading of Australian novels. Reaching beyond signification, the creation of meaning in literature refers to the significance a text acquires for the recipient's existence. The potential of this meaningfulness fluctuates between a process of explanation, of uncovering hidden meaning, and deception. Assuming that this range is best demonstrated in the literary treatment of negative experiences in human existence, of pain and suffering, we analyse how Australian novelists and critics set paradigms of meaning against the "Non-Sense" in experienced reality, who and what the agents of meaningfulness in Australian literature are, how they relate to each other and how they affect our reading experience.

Initialement paru en 1971 aux éditions du Cerf, Qui m'appelle ? est de nouveau disponible, avec un nouveau texte, plus minimal, de Kota Taniuchi. L'album évoque la solitude d'un enfant malade dans une chambre dont la fenêtre s'ouvre sur la lune et l'azur d'un ciel nocturne. Nulle peur cependant, mais un irrésistible appel venu d'un mystérieux ailleurs. L'enfant sort pour lui répondre et chercher "qui l'appelle" au pays des ombres. Rêve et réalité, vie et mort, se confondent insensiblement pour ce fragile petit Orphée. Au terme d'une quête doucement spirituelle dans l'au-delà de sombres paysages secrètement habités, il se réveille, guéri, dans sa chambre illuminée par les feux du levant. Ce merveilleux livre reçut le Prix Critici in erba de Bologne en 1972.

The Threat of Logical Mathematism
The present survey of the critique of mathematical logic in Germany at the turn of the 20th century attempts to answer several interesting questions : How did the contemporary German philosophers see the role and significance of logic ? What kind of relationships did they claim to exist between logic, mathematics, linguistics and psychology ? Pulkkinen starts by giving a historical survey of the development of German logic 1830-1920 as it appears against the background of German academic philosophy. Next he studies the interrelationships between logic and psychology, logic and linguistics, and logic and mathematics. After this the author presents the general features of the reception of mathematical logic in Germany between 1880 and 1920. This is followed by a more detailed account of the arguments of three individual critics : Fritz Mauthner, Heinrich Rickert, and Theodor Ziehen.

Classics in Cultural Criticism
This collection of essays, to be followed by a companion volume on the classics of American cultural criticism, traces the historical development of cultural criticism in Britain from the early eighteenth to the mid-twentieth century. It devotes separate essays to representative cultural critics whose work is surveyed by scholars from America, Britain and Germany. It ranges from Augustan writers like Swift and Pope through the tradition of British cultural criticism canonized by Raymond Wiliams' seminal Culture and Society. It will be followed by a sequel, Contemporaries in Cultural Criticism, where an overview of the concerns of the immediate present will be attempted.
